This is the thread we will be using to introduce ourselves to each other. Post a short blurb about yourself.
I'll start:
I'm Don Dudding. I'm co director of this summer's writing institute. I teach high school English, speech, drama, journalism, and computer literacy at Southern High School in Racine, OH. I'm working on finishing my first draft of my dissertation this summer before I go back to teaching in August so that I can finish my revisions by November and finally wrap up the PhD I've been working on for about the last 7 years.
My interests include writing and playing folk music on guitar and banjo, photoshopping on a website called "FARK," hiking while "geocaching," and sneaking in naps when I'm not working on the dissertation. My dissertation is a hybrid philosophical/historical/theoretical study of the mostly unexamined notions that support perceptions of authority. Although it's complicated, what I'm trying to argue in my dissertation is that good authority (which I call "pro-agentic") respects agency within rhetorical contexts and bad authority (which I refer to as "pythonic") relies upon coercive tactics or an implicit domination to get others to submit to its way of thinking.
Okay, enough about me. Now it's your turn. Who are you?

Hi, Don,
I am here too. My name is Kris Strawser, and I teach 8th grade Pre-Algebra, and 7th grade reading at Logan-Hocking Middle School. I finished my Master Degree, which was in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis on technology in the classroom, in 2006 from Grand Canyon University . I looked at this program last year, but wanted a free summer to recuperate from writing for my Master's.
My hobbies/business on the side is harness racing and farming. Those are my true first loves. I work to support them:) We have 10 horses at varying levels and ages. I also have a couple of paints for riding in any spare time I can get. We will be bringing home our newest addition (baby stud colt) in the next couple of weeks. Then I have my hands full keeping up with his education working with him daily to keep him used to being handled. That is a lot of work, but I love it.
I am looking forward to the class and meeting everyone else. Anyone else out there yet?
Kris
Now that spring quarter is behind me, my mind is much more tuned into preparing for the class! I am a recent convert to "blogging" but have refrained because it is the perfect distraction for English teachers with many opinions about the world ...and mountains of essays to grade!
I teach communication classes at Hocking College which include a range of writing classes, speech classes and resume writing/job search techniques. My very favorite to teach is a music and culture research and writing class that allows me to explore musical artists and genres of MY choice (students do have some input too!) We watch films, listen to tunes, discuss lyrics and write about it - where were classes like that when I was in college!
About me,well, call me an over-achiever, multi-tasker or just crazy -- but I somehow manage another part-time job doing administrative work for my church as well as helping to manage the lives of a husband and 5 kids, 2 dogs and a cat. (The cat is the easiest.)
Two kids are still in college; one just graduated from OU. We have a high schooler and fifth grader still at home, but I have found less people at home does not necessarily mean less managing or even less at the dinner table!
When I do find free time - I like to read (Cion has been a welcome diversion) or walk in my neighborhood along Lemaster Road or putter in the vegetable garden.
I am looking forward AWP - a little intimidated by early mornings and research papers - but I feel more inspired to do writing of my own just in this preparation phase!
Jayne is here, too.
I am Jayne Burger, and I teach 6th grade language arts in Gallipolis.
I have completed my Masters, become a National Board Certified Teacher (and renewed), and view the Writing Institute as another challenge in my desire to learn.
I am always up for something new, and I enjoy many different things. My husband and I enjoy music, movies, travel, camping, water sports, golf, volunteering in our community, reading, hanging out with friends, and any adventures we can find.
We are the parents of two beautiful female Weimaraners, usually referred to as "the girls". We live on the Ohio River, and I remind myself every morning not to take my spectacular view for granted!
I am ready for the institute, but a little scared of the "research paper!!!" and dreading the drive each morning. I have enjoyed the readings so far, especially Cion.

Hello,
This is Marlene Barnard. I'm from New Lexington. I teach fourth grade math, I'm on the CIP committee for the district, and I've taught for 13 years. I received my undergrad at OSU, Masters at OU in curriculum and instruction. Most of my best educational experiences have come by way of my students and my 2 daughters.
Hobbies include reading, gardening, and eating.
At the end of this class, my husband and I will be going on a motorcycle trip with 2 other couples to discover the whole entire state of South Dakota. Can't wait. Presently I have 5, 3 week old kittens whose mother was run over on the highway. I have never had pets, know nothing about baby kittens, and am totally open for advise, help, or someone who wants kittens. I really don't think it will help to prepare me for grandmotherhood in October.
