We could talk all day on the politics of standardized testing. When the bandwagon was started some 10 years ago, the feelings were strong even then that "the state" was creating a monster. I remember some vague Orwellian references at the time about a "big brother" mentality coming from the intrusion into local schools. The fact that the report cards have now become so much a part of how we now view schools in Ohio is very sad.
So I am left with the "so what" question. The reality is that it will take some serious mind-meld's for the decision-makers to change - not to mention the cost factor.
Is there a way to take what we have in place in terms of standards and how we use the tests. Can we redefine them, add dimensions for "local" concerns and even local grading and writing of these tests? Can we reuse the information from the tests in a new, more productive way?
