Lois and thought
Lois, great lesson. I really enjoyed both activities and can instantly use them in my classroom. I am sure my kids will have a great time with them. I really enjoyed today's discussion about questioning tradition and having the gumption to not just accept something because "that's the way it has always been." The rich discussion of today really made me engage in more meaningful thought than I have for a some time.

I also enjoyed Lois' lesson. Being able to adapt it to 1st grade will be a bit challenging, but it will work. I think the poem can be adapted more easily toward the beginning of the year by using pictures rather than words. The story will be more difficult and will need to wait until the 2nd half of the year to complete when they are better writers.
Jayne, I totally agree - Lois did a great job. It was a relief to see writing in terms of fun; we don't often think of it in those terms. I also found the discussion a great stimulus to thought; my brain feels like breaks on a vehicle coming driving down Pike's Peak - it is hot from overuse today! I need to process more in a more relaxed state. Maybe I'll process some of this tonight in a bubble bath tonight with a class of wine. I might sort it all out better under those conditions!
I loved this lesson also. I think we will probably do it whole group at first.
Lois,
What fun! We hardly realized we were working (Ie. Writing) I'll bet this is what happens to your students. Too bad we can't think of enough ways to make all learning a game.
