thoughts 6/25
Today was mindboggling. I found the discussion on the reading last night very enlightening. I'm still ruminating on that. Wow, Don got wound up, and wore me out, but I'm following his thoughts and I'm totally seeing that contrivance in testing, and the whole political side that I never really knew was there from the get go. That makes me angry too. I also believe in the "revolution". I always think of the line in Hunt for Red October where Sean Connery says "a little revolution every couple of hundred years is a good thing." We're past that by several years. But I also believe we can do that revolution within our classrooms, even if we aren't like Don with tenure, we can begin somewhere in changing how we operate within our own realm. I'm finding many areas where I can start that change.

Kris, I agree with your thoughts exactly. I think change within my classroom is a good place to start.
Don does indeed have a passion that will really spark a lively debate. I think he can excite even the most hesitant student. He does wear me out, but I'm glad he get so wound up. Seeing a fresh perspective is wonderful.
To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson--Every so often the tree of liberty needs to be watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
And no one can say that line quite like Sean Connery and have it be so memorable! I see these discussions as revolutionizing our own thinking - creating new paradigm for our teaching strategies that are somehow going to be imbedded within an older model - that one that has to work with in the system! I liked Patti's comment that she just allows the standards to flow out of what she is already doing. We need more confidence in that kind of teaching.
